News title:
Lung disease took our breath away (click here to read)
Article summary:
Julie, now 49, blamed her problems on the 20-a-day smoking habit she'd had since her teens. However, as she continued to be dogged by chest infections and the attacks became worse she was sent by her GP for tests. They revealed she was suffering from Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a rare genetic condition. It meant every puff on a cigarette put her at much greater risk than other smokers. It caused her to develop emphysema, a form of lung disease which normally affects much older people.
